Who’s the Best 21st Century Teacher in Toronto?
December 24th, 2008
I’d like to be a better teacher. In particular, I’d like to drag my teaching practices into the 21st Century and start doing more with the Interweb than bulletin boards and static HTML slides. I picked up a couple of highly-rated books, but the first didn’t contain anything that wasn’t obvious, while the second was a good example of stilted, pompous academese at its worst. I’d therefore like to find a mentor here in Toronto—someone who’s using modern technology for teaching in creative, innovative ways, and is willing to take about her/his experiences. If you know someone who fits the bill (or better yet, are that person), please drop me a line.
I’m not that person, but I thought I’d mention Mibbit. http://mibbit.com/ It’s a site a few of my profs used to allow students to do web-based IRC chatting during class. It can help answer side questions without taking the whole class off track.
Also, one of my profs is talking about using SubEthaEdit to collaboratively discuss/define concepts from our readings in real time next semester so if it’s successful, I’ll tell you more about it. Good luck!
I’d talk to Michael Jones @ Sheridan about how he’s using Wiki’s for the class work, and grading.
I know someone at the RH King Highschool and they’re science department are using Smart boards with games, quizzes for their subject matter. Its certainly a more interactive world with this technology.
I’m not sure there’s one person but rather people using different tools…
