CS Enrolment Up (a bit, finally)

According to a CRA press release (NYT coverage here), “The number of majors and pre-majors in American computer science programs was up 6.2 percent from 2007″, and “Total Ph.D. production grew to 1,877 for the period July 2007 to June 2008, a 5.7 percent increase over the previous period.”

    According to the numbers (U.S.), the CS+CE PhD graduation output has reached about 1900 a year, while CS majors enrolment stands on about 8000 (down from 16000 in 2000). It does not mean that every fifth CS major churns out a PhD (graduate demographics is a bit different), but the ratio is still peculiar… if any other field has it? Physics?
