Climate Change (Literally) on Trial

August 25th, 2009

Via Nature‘s “Great Beyond”, this story from the Los Angeles Times:

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce…wants to put the science of climate change on trial… The chamber is pushing for the Environmental Protection Agency to hold a public hearing — with witnesses, cross-examinations and a judge to rule on whether humans are causing global warming… [Its] goal…is to guard against potential emissions regulations by undermining the scientific consensus on climate change.

Not “show us in a forum we’re familiar with that this is really happening”, which I would understand, but “give us a chance to undermine the scientific consensus using the tricks that we know best”. Don’t they ever wonder whether their children will forgive them?

Do you think their children will forgive them if they allow the US economy to be wrecked, individual and corporate liberties to be stripped and science to be made the permanent handmaiden of government?

No, but I don’t believe any of that’s going to happen. I also don’t remember seeing anything about coal-fired power plants, SUVs, and fossil-fueled agriculture in either the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. If you can provide a reference, please do so. If you can’t, please put aside the alarmist partisan bullshit at the door—this is more important than the increasingly inane polarization of American politics.

Right on Greg! Populist partisan inane prattle is going to be the downfall of the U.S. not the belief in science.
