Organizing a Tech Event?

October 29th, 2009

The only downside of last week’s DevDays in Toronto was the more-abysmal-than-usual gender ratio: it was at least 100:1, and may well have been worse. So, if you’re organizing a tech event of any kind, check out geekspeakr.com — it’s a new directory of women in tech who can speak on topics ranging from Android programming to… um… something techy that starts with ‘Z’.  (Forgive me, I have a cold…)

A friend of mine pointed out at DevDays that all it takes is one female speaker to drastically improve the gender ratio. I’d love to know if there is any data to support this, as it certainly makes sense to me.

Simple solution. Find-out who some of the female developers are in your area. Ask them what topics would my the event useful to them. Solicit speakers for those topics. Invite the women to your event.

People only go to events they find to be useful.

    Android to Zimbra? :)

And geekspeakr’s been around for more like 2 years. There’s really no excuse for not having even one female speaker at this point… I’m entirely sure that that contributed to the low number of women attendees.
