I Apologize For Standing You Up…

February 5th, 2010

If I’m supposed to meet you today, but don’t show up, I apologize: Google Calendar is “temporarily unavailable”. There was no warning that I saw; disturbing that someone a continent away can disrupt my life in the same way that losing my day timer did twenty years ago. When I upgrade this WordPress installation in May, I’m going to look seriously at moving my life planning there—at least then there’s a tech support team I can contact.

So if you miss the meeting this afternoon with our Google visitors, that will be the ultimate irony?

A kind reminder that you’re on my committee meeting in about 15 minutes ;)

Hey – if you have a browser with Google Gears you can click that “Offline” link and it will allow you to view your calendar while offline. Similar functionality exists for Gmail and Docs.

I used to run my own services. I’ve found that Google fixes their services faster than I can fix mine when they go bad. Their service is also much better than any of the opensource ones I’ve tripped over. This makes my user community (the wife and kids) very happy; We’re sticking with Google.

I hadn’t noticed an outage today, but we’re using Google Apps, not the main service, so that may be why.
