Seven Non-Myths

August 16th, 2010

Another good post from Mark Guzdial, this one reporting on a CS education conference he’s attending. Among the talks was one summarizing seven non-myths about computing, i.e., things that people sometimes claim are myths, but which are actually true:

  1. Programming is boring.
  2. You have to sit in front of a computer all day.
  3. You have to work long hours.
  4. Programming is asocial.
  5. Programming is for those who think logically.
  6. Software is being outsourced.
  7. Programming is a well-paid profession.

You might want to point out some of the subtext. For example, the speaker claimed that for points 1, 2, and 3, this is also true of most professional jobs.
