The 50 Most Important White People in IT

April 5th, 2007

eWeek has posted a list of the most influential people in IT.  Their top 50 are here and here — all are white, and all but two are male.  Doesn’t look like the industry I see here in Toronto; certainly doesn’t look like my classes.

Most of those people are CxOs, not really “IT” people. We already know that there’s a huge “old white guy” bias in the executive ranks.

I only knew of 6 people in the 50-26 list, so I wouldn’t exactly call them “influential in IT”. One of them is my CIO, so really only 5. Maybe “influential in business”?

I don’t disagree that there’s a white male bias in the industry, but with this particular example, I think you’re barking up the wrong tree.

Ok, I knew of 11 of the top 25. But the CEOs of HP, Oracle and IBM are not what I’d call “influential in IT”!!! Not a very useful list.
