Via David Crow (who has comments on it as well), an article by Joey deVilla on the Fall 2008 VeloCity Project Exhibition at the University of Waterloo. VeloCity is a dorm reserved for would-be entrepreneurs, complete with a boardroom, a mobile device lab, high-bandwidth wifi, large flatscreens, etc. The exhibition was a tradeshow-style show and tell of the students’ ideas, some of which were as good as the best things we’ve seen at DemoCamp. As Joey says, why wasn’t something like this around when I was in university? (And why isn’t there anything like this in Toronto?)

Over at O’Reilly, Brady Forrest has a roundup of 10 Ignite events from around the world. We’ve been talking about changes to the DemoCamp format; maybe we should just open it up to either ignites or demos, and let the crowd decide?

…but mostly fun: DemoCamp 18 was last night, and as Lillian’s review says, it went pretty well. The venue was too small, and as she said, some of the off-color humor was a little tiresome, but it was good to see such a strong turnout from U of T, and Kosta Zabashta (with Victoria Mui’s help) did a great job of showing off his integration of DrProject and IRC. Special thanks to the sponsors, and Willis Haviland Carrier for the luxury of modern air conditioning.
The next ‘camp will probably be in September — look forward to seeing you all there.

…you’d probably know the names of a lot of up-and-coming bands—it would be part of your job. If you’re reading this blog, though, it’s more likely that you’re planning a career in high tech, so it’s fair to ask: how many up-and-coming companies in your area can you name? Backbone Magazine has just posted their PICK 20 list; I know thirteen of them, and as soon as this post is finished, I’m going to have a look at the other seven.

The title says it all — looks like it’ll be a good show.

A chance to introduce students to potential future employers is all well and good, but the real reason I go is that there’s nowhere else in Toronto I could see things like Zoomi. Jevon MacDonald has posted a great description. Gibson’s Law strikes again…

The next Toronto DemoCamp will be on Tuesday, July 15 at the Supermarket. Tickets are available at Eventbrite, and you can volunteer to give a demo or Ignite presentation at Wufoo. If you have something new and cool to share with the community, or want to see what other people are up to, come on down and join us.
DemoCamp
By all accounts went well — Jevon MacDonald has a full rundown. We’re overdue for another in Toronto, methinks…

The first TorCamp West is happening tonight in Oakville — Jason Lewin has promised a report, which I’ll post here. Spread the meme, eh!

Interesting paper on the demographics of American entrepreneurs:
…a larger proportion of tech founders are middle-aged, well-educated in business or technical disciplines, with degrees from a wide assortment of schools. Twice as many U.S.-born tech entrepreneurs start ventures in their fifties as do those in their early twenties…like immigrant tech founders, U.S.-born engineering and technology company founders tend to be well-educated. There are, however, significant differences in the types of degrees these entrepreneurs obtain and the time they take to start a company after they graduate. They also tend to be more mobile and are much older than is commonly believed.
